Course Objectives:

The course will enable the students to:

  • Examine the characteristic features of Metaphysical poetry
  • Value the spirit of the age of Renaissance in selected works
  • Develop a fuller understanding of the evolution of literary forms and movements

 

Course Outcomes -

The students will:

  • Develop an understanding of the religious, socio-intellectual and cultural thoughts of the 17th and 18th centuries
  • Critique the key themes in representative texts of the period, including sin,  transgressions, love, pride, revenge, sexuality, and human follies, among others
  • Compare and contrast different forms of poetry, such as metaphysical, cavalier, and heroic poetry
  • Interpret the literary devices, terms and techniques relevant to the metaphysical school of poetry
