Fourth Prof. N.K. Jain Memorial Lecture

The Department of English organized the Fourth Prof. N.K. Jain Memorial Lecture (virtual) on 20 October 2022 on the topic “The World is Translation: Reflections on the Practice and Philosophy of Translation”. The eminent speaker for the same was Prof. S. Shankar, Chair & Professor, Department of English, University of Hawaii, Manoa. Prof. Shankar began the lecture by introducing the three significant areas pertinent to the understanding of the act of translation, explaining how translation is not limited to the act of writing one text into another language, thus creating a more complex and central relation with any phenomenon. Elaborating upon the significance of translation as a new trajectory, he opined how translation becomes an act of generosity in a multilingual nation like India, cutting across class- structures. The session came to a close with a token of gratitude to Prof. S. Shankar, a note of remembrance for Prof. Jain and a formal vote of thanks to all by Dr. Rimika Singhvi.
