The Department of English, established in the year 1995, offers B.A. (Pass Course and Honours) at the Undergraduate level and M.A., M.Phil. and Ph.D. programmes at the Postgraduate level. The courses offered foster a distinctive approach that combines scholarly interpretations of individual cultural artefacts (prose, poetry, fiction, drama) with systematic reflection on the wider social conditions in which these – and the interpretation they support – get produced and transmitted. The programmes are founded on approaches that link individual texts to the conditions of their production and reception. In order to make the learning of a text more appropriate, the department emphasizes on the application of contemporary theories. Students thus have the opportunity to acquire substantial expertise in a number of interpretive approaches that assume or develop this perspective. With the aim of promotong research the department encourages students to take minor research projects funded by the University.
Our programmes also offer motivated students an unrivalled flexibility of inquiry across subject-areas of faculty-expertise which include Nineteenth and Twentieth Century American Literature and Culture, World Classics, British Romanticism, Post-Colonial Literatures, Women’s Writing, Early Modern Studies, Modern/Post-Modern Fiction and Indian Writing in English.
The students benefit from the close supervision of faculty-members who work at the intersection of textual studies and cultural theories. The Department’s focus is thus on the study of a broad range of culturally significant texts and the historical and ideological conditions under which they have been produced and received.
