The Department of English Literature and Language organized an online Enrichment lecture on “Humanities and Literature” on February 25. Dr. Ipshita Chanda, Professor in the Department of Comparative Literature, School of Literary Studies at English and Foreign Language University, Hyderabad, was invited as the guest speaker to enlighten students and scholars on the enduring role of language in literature as a medium of meaning-making in human society across cultures. The session commenced with a welcome address delivered by Dr. Sanghmitra Rathore.
Dr. Chanda opened her lecture with a thought-provoking question, “What do we do with language, and can it exist without our doing?” She provided deep insights into the discursive and constructive nature of language, emphasizing how literature is grounded in the understanding of human equality despite apparent differences. She also highlighted that literature sets an ethical standard of reciprocity and relativity, fostering a sense of shared humanity despite variations in experiences and perspectives. The session was followed by an engaging Q&A session, where Dr. Chanda reiterated the significance of literature in exploring and understanding human differences in a shared world.
